Fall Ag Tour, Tuesday, November 13, 2007

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at the Oxnard Financial Plaza, 300 Esplanade Drive, Oxnard, CA (parking lot near tennis courts), where a continental breakfast will be provided.  The bus will depart at 8:00 a.m. for the following sites:

Southland Sod Farms

Southland Sod Farms, America’s exclusive grower of genuine Marathon Brand sod, and Ventura County’s largest turf production and sales company, has been owned and operated by the Gramckow family since its start in 1976.  Over the last 30 years Southland has expanded from a mere 50 acres to more than 1,300 acres and is characteristic of the industry’s robust growth.  Southland’s Managing Partner, Jurgen Gramckow, will provide us with inside information on the industry and also speak during the luncheon on development in Hueneme.

The Port of Hueneme

Ventura County’s “Gateway to World Trade” has emerged in recent years as one of California’s fastest growing seaports.  International businesses use the Port of Hueneme as their gateway for trade between North and South America, Asia, and Europe.  The Port’s local economic impact of nearly $600 million in annual sales and 5,000 jobs within the county makes it one of Ventura County’s premier economic engines.  With 256,000 sq. ft. of dockside refrigerated warehouse space available to serve fresh agricultural shippers and refrigerated ocean carriers, companies such as NYKCool, Pacific Fruit, Del Monte Fresh and Chiquita Fresh are utilizing these modern facilities and positioning the Port as a major player in the United States for fresh fruit and perishable cargoes.  Additionally, the Port of Hueneme thrives on the movement of automobiles and heavy equipment.  BMW, Mini Cooper, Rolls Royce, Hyundai, Kia, Land Rover, Jaguar, Maserati, Mitsubishi, Saab, Suzuki and Volvo all move automobiles destined for the western U.S. through the Port of Hueneme.  In this special behind-the-scenes view you will visit the Port’s refrigerated sheds, auto terminals and more, including a ride on board one of Brusco Tug & Barge’s state-of-the-art Z-drive tractor tugs (wear comfortable shoes with good traction).

A Santa Maria style barbecue lunch will be served at the Port of Hueneme.  The bus will return to the Oxnard Financial Plaza at approximately 2:00 p.m.
